Alfonso Gomez (he/him), Community Affairs Director
Alfonso Gomez was born in Southern California and grew up in the Bay Area. Following his high school graduation, Alfonso was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). After undergoing four months of treatment and spending six months in recovery, he resumed his education at Diablo Valley College, where he earned Associate Degrees in Sociology and Social Justice. Alfonso continued his academic journey at the University of California, Davis, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
From the age of 19, Alfonso has been deeply involved in advocating for young adult cancer patients, especially those from marginalized communities. He has collaborated with various organizations, traveling across the country to consult on and advise national initiatives aimed at enhancing cancer care for young adults.
In his final quarter at UC Davis, Alfonso joined the UC Center for Sacramento Spring cohort, interned for the UC Student Association, and graduated in June 2022. Following graduation, he has served as a fellow for both the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California and Improve Your Tomorrow, assisting the youth programs department and mentoring young men of color, respectively. Currently, Alfonso holds the position of Community Affairs Director for the Sacramento County Young Democrats (SCYD) and is embarking as a Capital Fellow for the State Assembly's 2024-25 cohort.
